Last week I made a new home server after the old one was almost dying.
After a bit of research I decided to go for a sandy celeron.

Pretty cheap to setup and should be much more powerfull then an atom.
H61 mainboard (socket 1155), Celeron G540 (dual core, 2.5 Ghz), there should be Ivy celeron's Q1-2 2013.
And 4GB of DDR3 1333 RAM.

Used a picoPSU as a powersupply.
Idle's at around 20-25 Watt.

Might be usefull information?

Yes. probably more expensive for the same degree of performance or less.
I like it for the ease of setup (a few clicks and a test server is created, and you only need to pay for it for the few hours it's used, etc.)

I'm pretty sure your current solution is the best choice at the moment.

In case the new server doesn't suffice after a while - I concur with richlj - I'd actually recommend using an Amazon EC2 instance (T1.tiny or .small) with a small EBS root. It can then be upgraded as necessary with just a few clicks, or reinstalled, etc...

Other cloud services might be an option as well.

Bandwidth costs are quite decent and one can always put maps onto other servers.

The new server will be up tomorrow night, count 2-3 days after to set all the things up.

Good news, we've got an atom d525 instead of a d425 for the same price. (more than twice as powerful)

Have you considered running this on Amazon EC2? It should be very stable, not be subject to consumer-level power/internet outages or limits on upload/download speeds. You can run what you like on it, and as long as it could run on one of their smaller "instances" http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/#instance, it should be relatively inexpensive (if it would be possible to run it on a micro instance, the basic costs would be free for a year http://aws.amazon.com/free/). The only possible problem I could see would be the cost of data transfer (12c/GB - I'm not sure how much bandwidth is currently used to download maps), and how the hardware requirements would scale with growing numbers of users. What do you think?

If one day I manage to do a bonjour server, I will need a third party host as it will be too heavy for the current server. Same for TS3/Mumble, too much CPU and bandwidth needed.

There is no "official" FAF TS3 server, but it would be nice that everybody use the same, and reddev32 one is already up

I do have my own ts3 server that has all audios settings mexed out on all channels + Voice Data Encryption: Encrypted
so its open to all who want to use it + i am trying to get a new website up and running sup com, fa & supcom 2.

Maybe i can help you a bit i have a small server for my own web projects and teamspeak, but i have good connections to some providers here in germany and i wanted to upgrade all the time my server. So if you need more power i can upgrade to a bigger server and i will host faf for free.

If u manage to get the code working u need 1 good powerfull server with the internet conecction to handle them all

sound fun when you get it working.

I've got a code working for that, but the problem is to implement it in FA.

Problem is that you have to reconnect to change a destination address. That would work with a kind of "pre-lobby" checking all connections. That's the hard part, the rest already work

If you can parse the lobby text you could see that "Connection to whatever established" (in 400 languages) vs the users in the lobby, but rather you than me there.

More seriously, one of my little project is to make a "bonjour" server. When two players are nil, they will connect to each other through that server. The most difficult part is to see that two players are nil..
