if anything, this recent server issue has highlighted the need for additional people to support Zep's efforts, and not solely rely on one man when things go wrong.
im not saying that would cure everything, but the ability to communicate with other admins/mods at other hours, would help imo.
Yes, it would be nice if Zep could take the odd day off, but with the current setup, that seems almost impossible. Hes too "needed".

I think this is the best thing to think about for now. Don't forget the 'layman' who want to help as well.

no need, surely help with server costs is exactly why we just implemented an ad system?

I'm pretty sure there are many.

Lawyers...
Finding and closing loopholes is kinda their thing.

D3matt, that is untrue, because FAF has its own balance patch (technically a 3rd party modification of the game) and supports a ton of user content and mods, along with using all kinds of logos, pictures, and material from the game and engine.

A windows server is simply using the program.

FAF, were it for profit, is the use of copyrighted information as the basis for new material, and then reaping monetary benefits from your own work without paying dues to the original creator.

The two are nothing alike.
The FAF server itself is his original code, and being paid to maintain the server is perfectly legal. He cannot charge to use FAF because the issue you just mentioned, but maintaining the server is totally fine.

That said, as we're seeing here, this would probably come down to a battle of lawyers, which ZeP would certainly lose. Yay big corporations and lawyers ruining the world...

Sorry let me be crystal clear.

'Whomever owns the IP that gas powered games made which I'll assume is their parent company (war gaming) but might be some random guy hence my lack of being specific'.

Didn't realize that I had to specify beyond gas powered, the point is unchanged.

<_<

No saying we should or shouldn't pay zep (we should) but it's all a legal tightrope. I'm guessing paying one modder to work with zep is at best 'iffy'. I think giving zep a fixed income is like a hard line that we/he should avoid.

But it's really all up to gas powered. I'd guess they care less and less each day -but we are using their IP. Non-profit fun with someone else's IP, not a huge deal. Using some's IP for profit -big deal.

:/

gas powered games doesn't exist anymore

I believe that was for hiring another programmer or whatever.

If we can legally pay another programmer to make a mod, we can legally pay zep to make a mod.

I think it needs to be separate somehow, zep can't make money for just hosting FAF, but why not a fixed wage for active development time?

And if not, then how come GW fundraiser is ok?

Would making some not-for-profit company help?
