So in my life, I've never seen a correlation.

Generally (huge generalization incoming!) above average intelligence people tend to like challenging themselves, whereas people with lower intelligence can't be bothered with entertainment that requires them to learn and think: such as poetry, modern art, art music, chess, go and SupCom.

Education to a large extent is just a collection of knowledge that you memorize, not actual intelligence. Don't know why it would affect your ability to play SupCom. Hmm.... minor quip.

So we as a whole might have a slightest above average intelligence base, but it would be because of reasons like requiring a computer (and thus a social-economic factor that doesn't favor the unintelligent).

I don't see their being a coloration between eagerness to learn and intelligence. A higher IQ (by definition) makes it easier to learn (and thus satisfy that thirst) but the underlying desire should me more or less the same.

I only bring this up because my dad is again smarter than I but less eager to learn, the opposite situation above, and me not seeing a logical connection tween the two.

But for the top players, the ability to think multiple ideas in quick succession is essential. Speedy micro will help you execute those ideas. and being able to adjust your ideas, on the fly, based on what your enemy is doing is good.

In my eyes, those players at the top of the leaderboards, must have a high general IQ and responsiveness.

SO many games try to cater to the masses, dumbing things down so a few extra people can play.. FAF does not, FAF keeps things mentally challenging.
Its the reason when I see pretty much any thread asking to makes things easier, it gets a massive HELL NO from me. I want more complexity, more difficulty.
I truly do believe that your average console gamer/MoBA player/14yo, would struggle with FA at first, in a competitive environment.

Then of course, comes the old saying, "Practice makes perfect". Becoming Pro at FA is not impossible, just takes ALOT of repetition. With enough practice the brain can adapt to anything.

Make no mistake, somewhere in the lobby is a player who has only just joined, you probably didn't even notice them. In about a year or so, that player will be kicking your ass, and you will ask the question, "where did that guy come from?" :)

Well there is a difference between playing and becomming a top player.

as long as you have a small talent for strategic games, multitasking and can aford the time it needs everyone can play it

PS: I would love to know what sort of education the average Supcom player has :) or we make a nice IQ test :P

as Zep wants to remove the rating anyway we could display the IQ of the players instead and try balance with it :)

I aprove this idea xD Start the IQ tests

IQ has little to do with your ability to play a game. Seeing as moving units around isn't exactly that hard as it is, assuming you can use a keyboard/mouse playing this game is straight forward.

Now playing a decent first game is unlikely for nearly anyone. And a terrible first game can leave a bad taste.

I know my first games where against 1500+ players in ladder and I just died trying to build mexes first. XD (OMG, I have one factory and you're sending 30+ units at me!)
I then went to watch every single game I played to see what the other guy did, emulated it, and now I'm a nice mid 1050ish (and I don't play that often).

Then there is my dad whom is smarter than I IQ wise, but can't stand multiplayer games but loves this type of game (vs predictable AI).

So yea, IQ had little to do with it. You have to like this game style enough to put up with the learning curve. Or better yet, enjoy the rewards of winning enough to put the time in to win more often.
