Anyway, I tried a search of the boards and only came up with passing references to this, so apologies if its been discussed before and I somehow missed it. I used to compete in auto racing and I had a coach who was super into using the OODA loop in training. For those of you who don't know OODA is a model for competetive situational awareness developed by a US Ariforce Colonel during the gulf war. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OODA_loop I believe it was originally developed for fighter pilots but it applies to a wide variety of situations from tactical to strategic. Forged Alliance is probably the best game I've ever encountered for demonstrating the importance of the OODA loop as situational awareness is so important and your strategy is constantly evolving to respond to your opponents. A big part of developing OODA involves practice and mental rehersal to take decision making out of the realm of the concious mind and into the unconcious where it can be accessed and acted upon much more quickly. Its still unclear to me how much of this skill people are born with and how much comes down to practice. I personally am not very good at broad situational awareness, and often find myself over-thinking things in FA, spending way too much time on things which dont help me strategicly, which is probably why I'll never be a super high ranked player. But the great thing about supcom is even when you loose its still fun (at least for me).
Anyway, just thought I'd say hi and see if anyone else had encountered this.Statistics: Posted by fiercebrett — 03 Feb 2014, 04:05
