You are right with uprgading, though. Thats why you often see good players (or not lazy players :) ) building pgens around T1 mexes - makes it cheaper to upgrade them.

Are you saying that if the factory is going to be T2 I shouldn't put pgens around it so the engies have more space? I would have thought the opposite, considering that the energy drain from upgrading and producing higher tech units would benefit more from adjacency

It's good to get the bonus between a mass extractor and a factory on a little map, but if you play setons e.g. then you should surround the mex with storages.
