Well, part of this is kinda natural considering the way you can built up forces between each expansion.
But most of this is because the nature of the economy. For the beginning, instead of the normal 6-8 Mass Extractors, you're probably dealing with 1-2 per player in a full house. This means that your economy is complete shit, even with it being shared. Sure, if everyone stops playing and allows one player to build up you're fine, but otherwise? Mass is a huge bottleneck, especially on the second and forth maps(the first has fewer extractors, but they start at t3, and you have a few t3 fabs to help, though it can still be a bit rough). On those maps, you're facing constant, heavy pressure from the AI, enough to make multiple early mass extractors essentially off limits.
