As a type of combat simulator, this game places opposing sides within a scenario. Which modifies and shapes the style of contest which will take place. Choke point maps feature some form of terrain obstacle which must be negotiated. It is no less valid than any other for of map. It is just as valid as maps featuring complete open waters, or terrain elevation complexities or vast open spaces.

In essence, I would say it is the safety of a cul-de-sac which people enjoy - and why shouldn't they? Learn to use the map, and its emergent gameplay, to your advantage.

Open maps have more variables to focus on and more map dependent tricks to worry over.

So I can try and learn a million maps or learn how to play a choke map and call it a day.

Personally, trying to expand my map selection a bit but glad I finally have a strat that works well for chokes. (Gap specifically.)

Cause there are not too many of the other 2k players and what they usually play is... canis, pyramid, two hills, canis, wonder, pyramid, wonder, two hills, canis, wonder, pyramid, wonder, etc. It is rare to see some other map played. And when you try to host smth different... "nah, its not our usualy map we play every day, choose other"
But what i really miss are 2v2 and 3v3 games. 2k players just wont play them. Probably because it falls under "not our usual map" category.

The good thing is that in Faf there are people with inclination for both types of play. This is in contrast with GPG before its collapse.
As for thermo, I don't know, but I feel that if it weren't for the traditional restrictions it would play much better.
Anyway, SupCom is all about combining all types of play, most of which can be found on FAF. Open or closed maps are hosted all the time in custom games and you can find them in ladder too.But you do have to search and may be wait a little to find them.

y r there so many choke point setons type maps?

Because, people play them most often!
There is a huge number of "open" maps, but people do not play them.
How often do you see open palms hosted as a fun game?
Now, how often do you see, isis, thermo, waters of isis, teh setons, named as fun?
With the exception of thermo( a map so sadly cannibalised), even maps with chokepoints can be good maps, especially for newcomers that want to learn; as long as you play them without restrictions.
