The FatBoy from the UEF, for instance, isn't a nuclear bomb nor does it lobs nuclear bombs. It's a mobile factory/artillery.

That said, I did come with a reasoning for the name. While probably a huge load of BS, the Monkeylord is an oriental mythological character whose main trait is, basically, that he can do pretty much anything he wants because he was too powerful. Goku from Dragonball is based on the character so you can have an idea of how ridiculous it got at times (it is still debatable if Goku became more powerful than the original Monkeylord... though Dragonball certainly became much dumber than the original ludicrous tales).

So, by this reasoning, the Monkeylord is the experimental that "can do anything". It can shoot torpedoes, has AA, short range artillery, stealth (ludicrous!), is fast for a land experimental, and has a super overpowered laser. Also, there are not really any recognizable spiders in mythology and TA already had an Spiderbot and they tried not to use any names from TA in SupCom.

It is also extremely likely that at a very early stage of development the ML walked more like a monkey, or they tried to make him walk more like a monkey, and the name was more appropriate. Who knows?
