One thing to note about low rankings, you can infer a lot from colour of rating vs number of games played. If somebody has played ten games and has an 800 rating that is very dark, they are mostly likely really around 1600.

It's not an exact science, but always be aware that a relatively high dark score (500+ even) with a handful of games means that someone is probably an FA veteran with a new FAF account.

yes, but it could also be somebody with too much luck in his first game, or a afk'er in ranked
but high rating after a few games normally means that he is still on the way up thats true

as darker the rating is, as more uncertain it is
A white rating might mean: min 1200 max 1400
a dark/grey rating might mean: min 600 max 2000
while both would have their "certainess peak" at 1300

if you have a grey rating of 1200 and a white of 1200 it means for example

1200 -1400 min-max
and 1200-1800 min-max
and this means that the peak (the most likely level of performance) is for one player at 1300 and for the other at 1500 (means that the one with the dark rating is probably "better" than the other one

If you start a FPS online game and can't aim, you will have a 20:0 K/D.

It's less hurtful because you still have a sense of doing something :
Oh I got a tank and manage to hit something ! Oh I revive everyone !, Oh ! Respawn on squad ribbon ! (basically an award for dying).
While in a RTS, only the outcome of the game is meaningful. Sure there is a score, but it doesn't help make you feel better.

I don't see why we should have a "noob" server. Trueskill and matchmaker ensure that new players can find games on their level.
Going to a noob server and see 10 people online won't be helpful at all.

If there isn't a game in the lobby with a rating range that's suitable for me I host one. This was how I did it initially, it's how I do it now. The rating I specify in the title includes a min and max rating. These have increased as my rating has. I have had no major issues.

I really don't think Sheppard knows anymore what it means to be roflstomped by someone. Imagine that your opponent knows how to raid effectively, how to expand and how to make the landspam(TM), and you don't. You might as well Ctrl-K, and it's disheartening as hell. My first few matches on 1v1 were against 1500 rated players. If it weren't for my love of FA... :?

That is exactly what im trying to say. If someone who found FA interesting at a glance and decided to try it, liked what he found and joined FAF to broaden his experience, its going to be very disheartening.

People play games primarily to enjoy themselves. If each and every new player has to go through the process of joy-starvation JUST to stand a minor chance at not failing each and every game, most won't bother at all.

That is why i suggest that a separate server ( or alternatively different class of game [ like an actual noob game which is only joinable by those of a lower ranking ] ) be formed so that new players will be able to interact with one another and learn something.

Sure, the zero rating guys would get crushed by the 500 rating guys, but they'll still learn something and it won't be an utter curbstomp unlike pitching them into games filled with 1.2K and above. ( I don't relate rating to skill of the player, merely experienced and know-how. A low rating may beat a high rating , but he may not know the certain roles of positioning in bigger maps like setons )

1. For the last time I KNOW THAT. I know that any new player will lose horrible against someone quadra their skill rating. The average human being is capable of knowing if one number is lower than another number. I don't expect a COD player to know more about guns than a SEAL. Like wise i don't expect a fresh player to trump against a more experienced one ( unless that player fouled up horribly but that is besides the point ).

are you even listening, players in FAF decide who they play by them self period, there is no way a 2k player could say he fits into a game with 3 newbies, that is just not possible unless the newbies are stupid, but i consider nearly no player in this game stupid (exceptions prove the rule)
i expect a COD player to understand the general idea of rating indeed

asdfmovie wrote:
2. I know there are players who consider " scrub-stomping " a pass time and an enjoyable way to increase their ratings. Granted there is no way to prevent this and i concede that point.

also not listening, read again, same thing as above

asdfmovie wrote:
Actually you know what? An easy solution to this would just to bump up the auto-match system to include minor team games like 2v2 mode. That would solve a whole lot imo.

people already complain about wait times and unbalanced matches in 1v1 so yeah what shell i say to this comment except "no"

asdfmovie wrote:
Also , this thread was started with the intention of providing a suggestion. The core of my argument is that there should be a way for new players to increase their exposure without it being overly unpleasant and overbearing.

yeah, many people make mod suggestion for examples but they dont make the mods, unspecific general things do not help, unless you can really say "add this" or "i can add this" or "i can give you text to include it"

asdfmovie wrote:
I am in no way criticizing any pre-existing help to new players such as the links you provided. I apologize if i have offended anyone.

no you are technically critisising that there are not enough people to help newbies, but you arent doing anything, that is what anoys me

asdfmovie wrote:
And i agree with Ze_PilOt. The main problem is that there is little to no communication with other new players.

i rest my case, maybe you ask some other new players, i know many people that help them all day long (and they somehow like to do it, too

asdfmovie wrote:
For the record, i consider 15 minutes a long time to wait for a game. Especially in an open game system like in FAF ( Where all joinable games are listed instead of a " press search " function

there is a search button, you can use it
how long does take in LoL to set up a ranked match? you are well done with 15min there

I....what? I think i apologized. Maybe. Either that or you are too thick or too high on your high horse to recognize one.

A suggestion is a suggestion. You can either take it or leave it. No one is forcing you to take it seriously and implement it. You react as though you are ready to take up lit torches and pitch-forks against someone who suggests something relatively harmless.

So what if it irritates you? Do you think i own a copy of " Sheppard's Big Buttons Not To Push " ? I believe i started this thread relatively civilly yet you reacted as though I've insulted your mother and every person involved with the creation of FAF. There are plenty of irritating things on the internet, more-so on forums. If you want to blow a gasket every time you see an opinion that offends or irritates you, its a wonder you've lasted this long.

Also, i never expected people to help newbies. Quote me if i have mentioned ANYTHING that involves OTHER players helping OTHER players. In fact i suggested a TECHNICAL solution, not a PHYSICAL solution. There are players out there helping new players? Great. I am happy. But did i ever say that it was to be the solution for EVERYTHING? I don't think so.

adsfmovie, i completly agree with you its really hard being a newcomer in faf. But trust me its a waste of time trying to change anything in that direction. You'll just have to grind it out on your own. Watching casts, replays and tutorials is a great help. Try to get some friends invovled and make rooms together. So help is out there but its all up to you how you use it and than grind it out. good luck ;)

There are trainers for this, i didnt rejected anyone (except deathly) who asked and i guess neither did the others
viewtopic.php?f=40&t=1614
also everyone can join there, you dont have to be a 1600+ in my opinion, you can help completely new players after ~50 already
