FAF is using a free geoip database which determines the country of an ip address. This has been updated with the last server restart, that's why it changed for some people then.

GeoIP was pretty reliable before IPv4 addresses started to run out. Since then, ip ranges are more and more fragmenting, so a few more unused smaller address blocks can be handed out. But the longer IPv4 is running, the less reliable it will get.

Yep I have the questionmark flag instead of the Belgian flag for a few months now. It's funny, when I go to my mothers house and start up FAF there, I get the Belgian flag, but when I play at my house, I get a questionmark ... Even though it's the same ISP, very strange.

No. A lot of people have question marks instead of country flags in aeolus and they've had that since months ago. And it seems logical that the game takes the values from the client.

it's not something that's nominative. ask them I'm certain they get their flag showing at least some of the time. sometime I get the question mark it happened as recently as the day before yesterday but it really only ever happens to me 1% of hosts.

There are still some players with a questionmark as flag. Some friends of mine have this problem too. How can this be? They definitely don't use VPN or any other tricks.

I can think of one reason to change the flag displayed:
my new ISP routed me through Bulgaria which meant I had a Bulgarian flag all of a sudden - while I am in Germany.
After a FAF server update all of a sudden my flag is back to the Germany flag. No idea why really.
Was odd being displayed with an inaccurate flag ^^

Maybe some people dont want their flags to be seen bc they are from countries which are more likely to cause bad pings? Then changing the flag would do no good bc it still would mean bad ping :p

Knowing nationality is a feature of the platform. If you feel that's bad, make your case for it to be changed overall, for everyone, and we'll look into it if we think you bring up some good points, but don't attempt to circumvent it. As tatsu says, that is suspicious at BEST, at worst a great big flashing sign saying "I'm trying to break other rules, please ban me".

you shouldn't be wanting to change it. end of.

it's suspicious at best. for me my best recourse at weeding out a smurf is country flag . often smurfs are quite alone at having a nationality that is un- (or under-) represented on faf.
