Or ACU DROPS!!! learn to acu drop on any map :D. Theta passage was kinda boring to learn as well cause it is all about maneuveting, but in old days there used to be more cheese, more t2 land, more attempts to make anything other than t1 land and t3 land

When i just started playing Fields of Isis was my favorite ladder map cause that was one that i have used to play with friends. i mostly operated with drone reclaim steal, t2 pds and ecoing, but facing stronger players i often had to use TML to snipe acu.

Centry point was quite an interesting map, i had lots of good games there, you had nice choice of getting 60% of them map or midle reclaim. very hardcore close distance expansions, lots and lots of forest and lots of reclaim in mid, double hydro start, an expansion with 8+ mexes and also double hydro...

arctic refuge is tought and not much fun to learn, learning diferent BOs that you can do with reclaim was kinda fun, but that does ot last long. expansion with ton of reclaim and 4 mexes in middle of map makes it "all in" to get mid.

Syrtis was meh... getting middle mass and not getting killed, getting expansion all comes down to sending more t1 units... learning how there is only 3 choke points and you can eco and tech fairly safely-greedely. rushing to t3 mobile arty for cyb was quite fun as you wreck people who still have 50% of t1 units in army, creating chokes and defending them with medusa and t1 pd (medusa was bit different in gpg). Also as aeon i remember rushing t2 air so my opponent had to fill whole map with t2 flak, then t3 land, then t3 air then GC, was fun time tech switching... but that probably can be done not only on syrtis.

Open palms - not really fun, spam manevering, BO whoring (sycronised reclaim and fast base building, getting extra hydro)

williamsons bridge had more interesting maneuvering that simple open maps, but it mostly was BO whoring, but when it got to area denyal it can be come an interesting game (t2 t3 tech). air sometimes rapes to hard as there are multiple passages and maa can't switch from one to another quickly.

i maybe could write more but have no time

As for 1v1s:
Farce in the Forest has a good combination of choke points and open areas
The Land Wilderness teaches you to distribute your forces
Theta Passage forces you into ACU combat and is small enough to focus on micro

Let me rephrase. When learning the game (but not wanting the complication of different maps all the time), what's the best first map to start with?

The best map to learn how to play on will optimally include: (10km)

A raid-able core base for you and your opponent
A raid-able natural expansion for you and your opponent
Mexes placed at various locations around the map to push out of your base and claim
3 or so lanes (or two and a middle) to move down
Natural reclaim placed around the map
Some high mass value wrecks to fight for
Maybe some areas that encourage drop play like raised plateaus or etc.

:!: Please do learn the basic mechanics instead of working on build orders, you'll learn a few, push through the hopeless players and then'll you'll be stuck at 700 ladder rating with no real understanding of how to play, be ultra difficult to train properly (even for ppl like dog and me), and then your maps will rotate out of the pool or something. Learning the mechanics will get you much further, and you'll happily be able to make your own build orders on the fly while you do so.

Start on something like theta as suggested by Keyser where as you advance you will see the importance of opening builds leading up and until your ACU departs the base.

keep in mind each answer in this thread is really going to be down to personal preference.

I personally loved Loki while I was an utter noob and figuring out ladder with my sparing partners. but be warned it's a foul misstress when you get to more skilled levels of play. other more skilled players will make this go from a map you love to a map you fear.

now I've rationalized the fear and I love it again even though I'm nowhere near confident on this map.

it really depends on your style of play. lately I've been loving Vulcan's reach <3 and there's another one but I forget the name :(

You got early bombered one time too many?

My default since the days of original release was Finn's Revenge, but that's purely because it has every terrain type and looks nicer than desert / mars style maps. I have no idea if it's actually a good competitive map, hahah.

Thanks!
