Talking about that in rts you might have more time for chatting...
I remember a phantom game where I was able to build like 9+ nuke launchers, and they were not noticed, cause 2 innos that were left were to busy chatting xD

That moment you pull off that telesnipe when you're down and out, just by utilising chatting as a diversionary weapon

There's a great TA cast about it somewhere...

Can't seem to find it though, I was sure it was a seton's cast of some kind...

Some people are more chatty, some less so. Some can't be bothered after the 5th ladder game in an hour, others are just too busy clicking buttons to bother with it.

Guess that's one way to "communicate".

RocketRooster, you cannot change what FAFers will do. You can, however, change your perception. As aforementioned, there are practical reasons for people not saying glhf or gg wp, such as:
1) They are giving out commands instead of chatting, which is more important if they want to win, which is usually the case.
2) They do not know the meaning of gg, wp, gl or hf. They just don't know what that means and do not bother finding out.

Or some people try to not dilute what a good game actually is by calling every game they play a good game. Laziness is also a factor, probably biggest one.

How is saying nothing, enduring a game with you, and saving you the time at the end being selfish? I'd say it's a very neutral attitude, def not rude. If you need a cuddle play with your hamster.

Sadly, my position is more finely nuanced than you realise.

I could be patronising and tell you to have this conversation with me again in 30 years, if I'm still alive by then...

You see, quite apart from the fact that you spit in the face of the lessons your parent(s) tried to instill in you, and disrespect them when you disrespect the people you encounter, your attitude is a sad reflection of the insular moi moi moi numero uno mindset that is infecting the world.

This conversation is not about FAF gaming ettiquette, or any gaming ettiquette at its core, but about the broader perspective that good manners and politeness are the grease in the wheels of society. You may think it harmless in an anonymous environment, but I guarantee you that every little action you repeat becomes a behavioural pattern.

Good manners and a bit of class takes you further in life than all the smarts and money in the world. And now you'll probably retort that my opinion means bugger all to you in the wider scheme of things. Perhaps, but that would be all the more of a pity since you felt compelled to respond but are, ironically, probably not interested in having your weltaanschauung brought into question.

It's no skin off my back - it will come back to bite you in the arse one way or another. It's also not my job, or my interest, to complete the job your parents perhaps tried in vain to do. You seem to forget that I was a young'un once myself too, and while it seems like a long time ago, I can still clearly remember the stupid fug I suffered under (as do all young people) while trapped in a sense of self-entitlement and feeling that the world should bend over backwards to accommodate my impulses.

You will lay that to rest in time. Of that I have no doubt. The question is, how long will you resort to immature self-rationalisations of your selfish behaviour before the message gets driven home, or how serious will the kickback be when you inevitably knock your head against the wall of social constructs that have been organically erected over the centuries through the simple expedient of them acting as social glue? Time will tell.

tl;dr

Good manners, even in the face of the undeserving, are a mark of a proper backbone in those who have transcended their childish pursuit of self-fulfillment at the expense of everyone else. It is how you treat people who can do nothing for you in return that defines you.

You see, respect for others is not so easily obtained. You first need to cultivate self-respect and see your behaviour as a driver for your self-image before you can project it onto others. And once you gain it, it does not matter whether the other person does not deserve it, or whether it would be more expedient to simply ignore it - the act of giving respect is its own reward.

Which is why it is no skin off my back to pull my finger from my arse and acknowledge my opponent with four keystrokes, because, well, I am made of better quality materials than the alternative.

Simple as that.
