Recently i started playing FAF again and i noticed a change in content which intrigued me. The C-D2 Engineering Drone upgrade of the UEF SACU had a t3 engineering suite.
This was a very pleasant surprise because this allowed(although limited in usefullness) flying engineers.
Shortly after my discovery i found the forum topic in which this was discussed and why this was changed. I'm a big fan of making previously useless upgrades a useable thing.
While fidgeting around with this new ability i recogized two possible uses:
1. Simply as a flying engineer. Traversing difficult terrain, immunity from groundattack etc.
2. As a faster constructing unit in cooperation with other drones.
Due to the way my brain works i use kennel based drones a lot to help simplify my expenditure. I use between 2 till 6 groups of rovers to assist engineers, ACU, or SACU's, factories, etc, with queed tasks. Because i've numbered the rover groups its easy for me to switch priorities(i have a neural disability and this helps me keep track and oversight).
One thing thats really a downer in using this method is that rovers will only start helping if the engineer they are assisting starts with its task(normal engineers start constructing on their own while assisting others).
This combined with the slow (turning)speed of t3 engineers and (S)ACU's results in a lot of downtime for the assigned group.
The reason i got excited about the C-D2 Engineering Drone upgrade was that i perhaps could assist that drone with regular kennel drones in a way that would allow faster construction and less downtime for the assisting kennel drones.
But for some reason i can't assist the SACU drone with kennel drones. They just hover around it not helping. I can assist the SACU drone with everything else except other drones.
Although i can remedy this with localy build kennels(in default modus, assisting everything in range), it still puts my hopes and dreams of badassness down
My question here is if this is a game mechanic which is hard to change(drones assisting drones) or if it has something to do with other considerations(like balancing). Because i can imagine its hard to balance heavily assisted flying engineers.
