Oh, I'm sorry, you are totally right! That changes everything! Passmark is THE go to benchmark when assessing GPU performance. The 780ti really IS 10% faster then the Fury x!

The most important benchmarks for future game tech and performance are Ashes of the Singularity and Doom (the posted benches are older, for Doom benches use google). Compute benchmarks are highly architecture dependent but AMD is generally faster at compute.

@OP ignore this post. It is poorly researched and an epic fail of presentation. That benchmark is extremely biased. All up-to-date comparisons between AMD and Nvidia's GPUs (Polaris vs Pascal, with the bigger tech analysis sites doing follow-up reviews in Nov/Dec after drivers had matured a bit) show that the RX 480 now matches the GTX 1060 punch for punch, and floors it in the few DX12 titles out there. The 1050 doesn't really have a good segment, with the 460 and 470 from AMD occupying more common price points.

Always do your research, look at Perf/$ ratios, and never let yourself get biased to one company or the other, as the game can flip from year to year without warning, as well as vary up the price chain.

780ti almost 10% faster then the fury x? That is probably the most hilariously biased benchmark I ever saw. Maybe you should try a cuda exclusive benchmark

Maybe your cpu would be a good start, as always with games you're looking for high single core clock speeds instead of core amounts
Then i would lean towards memory, RAM and maybe an SSD
GPUs will only help if you cannot render the frames fast enough, it might help with the speed the game runs (the sim speed) a tiny tiny bit but otherwise other parts are more important

I disagree, it's pretty hard to beat the 1050/1060 cards if you're on a budget

Presently, AMD's lineup at those price points either knocks the socks off, or matches, the NVidia lineup.

Not only that, the architectural features are better for people who want the GPU to last long. AMD performance is also less distorted by driver optimizations. For those reasons AMD cards generally perform one price category better after 1 or 2 generations in gaming benchmarks. Compute is mostly AMD anyway ofc (but is task depentent).

From the sound of it your system right now is pretty old. You will probably have to upgrade your Motherboard as well, and perhaps even your RAM (Depending on your present hardware). All in all you're looking at probably a $200-$300 upgrade at the very least.

Your FPS can be low, but that won't affect the speed of the game, just your experience of it. If you're not happy with the framerate (smoothness) of the game, you'll also need a GPU (Graphics Card), which will set you back about $100 for a budget card, and go up from there.

If you gave us your current system specs, as well as a budget and your country of residence, I'm sure the forum would happily come up with a number of options for you.

I was thinking of a pc upgrade because when I play some of the co-op maps (solo is my idea of fun!) I find that the in game time elapsed is often half of reality. Eg clock says 30mins when an hour has really passed.

My cpu rating in lobby is a healthy 169.

I've noticed also in busy team games (eg 10 or 12 players total) when things slow down another player may say they are getting a healthy 60fps when I `feel` mine is around 30 or less.

So, what if anything do i need to upgrade?

I suggest you get a budget GPU, as for the CPU--pick a relatively modern, mid-spec or higher processor from the past few years and you'll be just fine.

Regarding GPU/CPU -- the game is bottlenecked primarily by the CPU, but in certain cases the GPU will affect your gameplay. For instance, due to how range-rings are implemented, if you chose to use them your GPU will be taxed a lot higher than you would expect, in a few cases this will cause the game rendering to become a bottleneck and slow down your simulation.
