Anyway Gorton, won't rating decay potentially cause a big problem of rating deflation? If points are lost to thin air continually, everyone's rating will eventually decrease. Imagine for example after my break I came back 1800 with rating decay, then gain 600 points, it will suck everyone else's. Additionally if it happens over short periods of time, it will happen naturally with any slightly inactive players?

No, because it's not really decay, just increasing your deviation, so in reality trueskill takes into account your mean and won't affect other players more than normal.

I just want to get back to playing this game regularly and the best way (and based on my preferences, the only way) is to play ladder and get some wins and losses.
Talking to some of the higher rated players, they seem to still be getting 1700 rated players on ladder even though they are ~2k. So I don't see the problem really if I can crush a 1400 and then lose horribly to a nearly 2k :D.

Either rating decay would be nice or just a divisions system or something that offers something of a 'decay'.

Rating decay sounds like a tooth disease :D

I agree.

1) Gaining your rating back after you lost it, with the possibility of having unbalanced games (because you are underrated). This is in your favour (opponent loses).

2) Losing a lot of games because you aren't on the same skill level anymore. Unbalanced games in the opponent's favour.

While writing it down like this, you do seem to have a point.

I understand that, but I would say in most cases players will eventually regain their old skill level, and in the process suck rating from everyone else no? It wouldn't happen overnight, but I think it would over a period of years cause the average rating to decrease for everyone. Which isn't necessarily a problem, just something to consider because of the meaning people have now attached to things like "2K rated players" etc

Rating decay over time, or some other method for returning players to be matched against players matching their current level of performance, would be a really great thing. I used to be an average player, don't remember where exactly in the ranking but nowhere near the top anyway. I've tried to come back a few times but it's just so depressing to lose so terribly every time. Every now and again I get the itch to come back, try a few games, get utterly destroyed, and forget about the game. Then do the same thing a year later... And I know that there are more players like me, who would like to come back but feel it's too depressing to take the beating for ~50 games, or what ever is needed for your rank to drop enough to be matched against someone you have even a slightest change of winning.

It doesn't help that the player pool in ladder is really not that large, so you just get beaten up by the same few players repeatedly, knowing from the start that you have absolutely no chance of winning. If there was a chance for returning players to get their ranking reset or dropped down significantly, I know I would find it much easier to come back, and I believe many others would too.

well given that its current implementation is in the form of Tokyto_, it feels like one too.

Slippery slope and all that.

When rating decay is finally implemented, we can hopefully fix this.

If there is enough people trapped with the same issue, it might be worth considering. I think it would only be a problem for elite players ie 1600 above who don't get matched with many people

Rating decay sounds like a tooth disease :D

Personally I'm a new player coming in, my motivation is at its peak - mostly because on ladder I am matching with lots of players I have a chance against. If I was a few years down the line and was in your position, I'd most likely feel the same

So, are you seriously trying to say to us that some subtleties in balance or game mechanics affect your gameplay so much?

I never said that.

Why does the score matter so much?

Truth be told I have no idea, it's just how I feel. But it's not the points that matters. I play the same 4 people on ladder and lose to all of them.

complains about this, then the majority of FA players should just quit and the FAF shuts down.

I don't know what this is supposed to prove? I used to love ladder when I was 1300 rated (with the exception of lame who ruined it for me on occasion xD) regardless of whether or not I won the game. I don't get that anymore because I know when I queue ladder that I am going to get one of 4 people who will beat me and always have (and don't tell me to go in with a positive mindset, because I always do the first few times and it ends the same regardless). Knowing that I need to lose 300 points in order to not get them anymore and so that I can get some players I am at the same level as puts me off. I'd be much happier with a division system in this regard.

It's the repetitive losses that I need to take in order to get some wins in order to get the motivation to play. Because if I have no accomplishment I will not enjoy it.
My rule throughout my life has been that I am good at what I enjoy and below average and what I don't. At this point I don't enjoy playing because of this.

Rating gives a sense of purpose , ok , and accomplishment true. But when it becomes the only goal it is not healthy.

Ladder is more than just points.

This sounds more like an excuse and less like a real cause.

The real cause is that I don't enjoy the game because of what has already been stated above. Therefore I won't get better. When I enjoy the game more, I will play more and get better.

Literally, I need to start from ground zero again to enjoy the game. But because I am "trapped" at a high rating (and deliberately losing points is against faf rules).
