For a new system I would take W8, because of the few improvements and the fact that I already have it and have no reservations against it at all.
Maybe the price difference ?? I don't know... unless you go the yarrr- harrrr way - then W8 for sure.
As I said, I found only a few compatibility issues. But I guess W7 also had them when going from XP.

From what I understand, W8 has the same kernal as W7 with a new UI, which is why they perform identically. It aslo has a new scheduler, but so what. There is no point changing from 7 to 8.

I used it since beta, I got it for free over MSDNAA / Dreamspark and my findings so far are:
Metro/ Modern UI is useless, but you can get by it and boot straight to desktop.
