While sonar from the air is an actual thing, land based isn't. So I would say no.

I thought that (IRL) the helicopter first needed to launch a buoy with a sonar before being able to launch torpedoes

Should a unit with sonar, while on land, be able to use it to detect submerged units in nearby water?

For instance, a monkeylord or Cybran destroyer, while standing on the shore, can currently "use sonar" to detect a submersible in the nearby water. The submerged unit cannot detect with sonar the unit on land, naturally.

(The current behaviour is that this does work, which surprised me, as this is inconsistent with how sonar works)

you're right. it can easily be fixed I'd wager.

But yea it probably would make sence to have sonar off on land.
Also would be cool if sonar in one lake would not see units in other lake, and if montains would affect effectiveness of radar, but those things are harder to implement
