Steam Compatible with disk

Hey, I just recently got this game from the suggestion of a friend. He owns the pc disk version and I bought it on steam. We've been trying to play together, but haven't been able to connect over LAN. Is it because we don't have the same version of the game, or should I turn my attention elsewhere?

are you both opening the faf version of fa (the exe in c:/program data/faforever/bin)?

If you are playing over faf this shouldn't be an issue, just make sure you are running the faf version as belated has said, if not then its possible they are different versions; this said, your friend can put his old cd keys into steam to redeem a steam copy of the game.

If you are trying to play the base game, then yes you are running different versions.

If you play via FAF, either using the local .exe to play LAN or just using FAF then it will work.
