Is there really any point in watching replays?

Postby Flynn » 14 Feb 2015, 19:19

Seriously, who the hell remembers stuff from the replay they have watched? All it is is stuff like "Right, you mass stalled there, you lost an engy here, your bomber got countered by an interceptor there" but no real overall strategic analysis. I can't even remember what a did wrong on a given map. I really can't see the point in watching replays at all.

Watching replays is the most important thing if you want to improve.

If you know you've power stalled or whatever what's the point.

I think if you know what you did wrong you don't exactly have to watch the replay. If you don't know what you did wrong then it is a good idea to watch the replay.

Trying to figure out what kind of mental pattern ended up with you powerstalling like that and what you can do in the future about it. Just watching the replay doesn't do anything, you have to know what you are looking for.

Exactly as Blodir said, if you dont put some effort, you will never achieve any result. Probably thats why Flynn is stuck forever at his 1300 rating :)

The biggest useful point i found in watching replays is watching what your opponent does, how he reacts to your actions and what effect they have. In a real game you can only anticipate all these things, and usually are busy with tons of other stuff. Watching a replay nothing distracts you anymore and you have 100% precise info on your opponent - now its up to you how to use it :)

It's very useful. For example I recently lost vs TA on forbidden pass. I watched the replay and I noticed that many of my pillars were killed by t1 arties. Why? Because when switching to t2 I did not queue up land scouts, so I did not see those arties. That kind of thing is useful to know.

If you don't know why you lost you could watch a pro replay on the same map, then compare what you did to what they did. Or send your replay to the replay review thread or to speed2. He already gave you some very good advice :)
