A way to automatically upgrade SCUs is already in the game: SCU auto-upgrade markers.

You can place them whereever you like, and when a blank SCU becomes idle near them, it will automatically start the all upgrades defined by the type of marker (combat/engineer path).

You have to define a key for it, and when you set the marker, a popup asks you to choose "combat" or "engineering" path.
Those are the same paths that you can configure if you have an idle and "blank" SCU.

The config of those two upgrade paths is near the commander icon, on the right: Two very small icons will appear, and with right click you can set the upgrades for each "upgrade path" as you like.

If you left click on one of those icons, all currently idle blank SCUs will start to upgrade in this configured path. They also will be in the corresponding set of "idle engineers", in the extended view, at the top.

To auto-upgrade freshly built SCUs, just place an auto-upgrade marker somewhere, and set the rally path of the quantum gateway near it. Done.
Finished SCUs will walk over to the marker and automatically upgrade to the path configured for the marker.

RAS preset will ruin eco balance: you put t3 mex or fab to quantum gates and preset is 3d most efficient way to eco. With more discount might become 2d. And what about seraphim that don't have RAS on scus.

That is a buff, it is intentional
It makes scus better in late game if you invest in multiple gates connected to mass fabs or pgens

Problem was that people were never useing scus, having adjustency bonuses is just another reason to use scus but not just rush Rambo scus with huge assist...

There are many different ways of balancing nerfing/buffing different presets and upgraides and scus overall

You can get other battle units with discount. You can't get other eco units with discount.

So, some preset will benefit from adjacency while others not
And upgrades "on the field" will not benefit from it

Not to be a buzzkill but this is eerily close to what is called "Coding by exception".

I think the best SACU upgrade is the UEF shield generator field. It can significantly increase the durabilty of experimentals especially of a FATTY while building additional stationary shields, pd or sam/flak. Two of them close to each but not with overlapping bubbles give you so much protection and flexibility. Together with fatty it's so amzing. Protecting ACU against TeleMazer or Stratbomber is also a nice thing. You need 15 strats to penetrate the shield. 20 strats wont be enough to kill acu in one pass.

Fatty: Health: 12500hp, Shield: 20000hp, mass: 28000, energy: 350000
SCU: Health: 16000hp, Shield: 52000hp, mass: 7600(2100+2000+3500), energy: 518950( 25200+ 93750+400000)
