Well then lucky for us there are educated people who are able to use telepathy and clairvoyance to remotely gauge whether somebody else's computer is up to the task.

And especially lucky that they will have the wisdom to only kick players whose machines will definitely go below zero speed, and not indiscriminately kick people who are likely to drop to +1.

actually yes, once you've played with someone and he slowed the game to -8, you will probably remember him and never play with him again right?

Yes, but this is a different situation. Of course if you play against someone and you have a bad experience, it's reasonable not to want to play with them again.

This is very different from taking the word of a benchmark as gospel, especially given peoples’ tendency to misinterpret numbers (for instance ping values and interpreting trueskill).

Well its either that or we all start using http://bitgoblin.com/fapt/ playertrack like we did back in gpg.net days. I'm tempted to start my own mini database so I can keep track of people I play games with so I can tell if they are a quitter, lagger, or exploiter.
