How to change color of one unit in a faction

Postby bofhlusr » 02 Feb 2019, 02:57

Total newbie to modding. I spent about a couple of hours googling, reading and searching for a tutorial or mod faq but could not find an answer which is why I joined this website. The question: how do I change or re-texture(?) a unit's skin? What kind of tools would I need? For *example*, how would I change the color of theTech 3 Engineer in the UEF faction to another color for *personal use only*? I read mention of paint programs, GIMP and 3DS MAX. Blender and the like but have no idea what these are, where to get or buy them, or how to use them.

Is there a tutorial somewhere of how to change a unit's skins? Thank you.

(By the way: I know about .scd, zip and lua files; text editors, Windows, not touching the original source files, installing mods, etc. already).
