When I tried the normal command line switch for replays (\replay "replay file"), it didn't work. Is there another command for the .fafreplay extension, or does it need to be unpacked first, and if so, how?

You can't use the game to launch FAF replays directly, since the FAF format contains extra metadata.

The FAF client will run the game and feed it the replay if you launch it with the filename of the replay as the first argument, however.
