Difference between FA and FAF

Postby Navras » 22 Apr 2013, 04:15

Hi guys,

So I've played a lot of Forged Alliance over LAN with friends and brothers but on a version I don't even think was ever patched so its quite old. I am just wondering what the differences are between the original Forged Alliance and Forged Alliance Forever.

Forgive me if this is a terribly noobish question

ha ha, would be nice if someone will post changes from 3599 to 362* in one post :)
As far as i know:
When you install FA it is 3596
Then goes pach to 3598
Then small pach to 3599 - last official version
Then community maked an unofficial 3603 beta - steam and most of the pirats running this version, but it was not availble for GPG
3603, 3604(v1 - v6), pachmod made by community BASED ON 3599 to play in GPG, so it bit hard to track changes for me. Those pachmods were used to play by FA-Ladder system that could replace GPG, but it did not.
Then FAF appears, there were said that it is based on 3604...
Pach logs from 3604 to 362* are availble on FAF wiki

I had some nice nostalgia here, i hope my english was ok.

Note: 3603 beta is shit.

in short:
- FA is the game you play (updates were abandoned by the production company a long time ago)
- FAF is the online multiplayer client (which updates FA with patches, better graphics, new maps, some mods, 6v6 gameplay, a 1v1 ladder system, ...)

edit: you can play FAF on LAN as well (when you have installed FAF and hosted a game before you try it out in LAN): viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3629

Naval wreckage
Restorers no longer game-breaking
Mex upgrade bug fixed
Loads of other bugs fixed
Better graphics shaders

The list is pretty much endless but these are the ones that stand out most to me.

Biggest change for me when I first played on FAF was you need to build an Energy Storage before you can overcharge (IMO one of FAFs best changes) this might catch you out when a T1 land spam charges your ACU so include it in your early build queue. :ugeek:

Is this vanilla? I remember 3599 and the steam version both requiring a storage to overcharge as well.
