SupCom DIY Models & Crafts

Postby Fichom » 10 Feb 2016, 01:09

Hello everyone.

I'm not sure if this thing already exists, and if it doesn't, I'm sure there is a reason(goddamn introverts, and you know, it uses time), but here is what I want:

I'd like to collect all SupCom related representations/models of units/buildings in one place. What in three bloody tech trees am I talking about? Well, I am sure I am not the only one who looked at SupCom models of units and buildings and got dazed by the beauty. With assumption I am not the only one, I was wondering if anyone tried recreating those models/designs or created models based off of the SupComs models, but using different materials/methods. What do I mean materials/methods? Anything really. You might be into wirebending an Aeon Harbringer, or maybe you are into woodcarving. Welding? Glassworks? Casting out of metal? Plastic? 3D Printing? Sculpting your old chewed gums into a shape somewhat resembling a Mech Marine? Using your over the top Origami skills on your unpaid bills to create a perfect Monkeylord model? Anything works really. Don't forget about drawings(I'll be discriminating with this, but I'm not looking for photoshopped screenshots from game, I'm looking for from scratch drawings).

Feel free to post any and every creation you create yourself, or If you find someone else's work, post it(make sure to give due credit)! Let's see what you and your models are made of(if anyone is into it).

Since some kind of standard would be nice; post the picture of your handwork in addition to a picture of what the model is supposed to represent. Make sure to have 1 large picture of the model, and then a few others from different angles(use spoiler function to hide other photos apart from the main)!

And, since I added huge lists with all unit types(with faint hope one day we may have hundreds upon thousands of models :) ), here are the first 2 posts that actually posted some models, so you don't have to scroll for three days of units list :)

Hi there!
I built a few models from balsa-wood... Not as good looking as the brick from Hascins :D but at least it's something!

I'm doing a FA unit model revamp that will have both game-model (less detail) and super-detail for 3-D printing and possibly down the road animatronics (yes, I plan to put motors and sensors into it and make them walk).

When it's done (been screwed on time lately) I'll post the results, but here is a preview of the Mantis so far:

Since I started the whole thing, I guess it wouldn't be bad to present my own handy work.

Now, call me childish, but LEGO® were always a fascinating thing to me, and I loved them ever since I was a kid. Of course, living in a less-than-average economic situation, I can't afford thousands upon millions of LEGO® pieces I would like to, I resorted to a pretty nifty solution: LDD(Lego Digital Designer). It is basically a virtual space where you get to piece together anything you want, using most of the LEGO® pieces that are available(new released pieces usually aren't around, but you can color the model in colors that don't exist for certain pieces in LEGO®). And so I did. I create a bunch of stuff, but I always wanted to try and make SupCom models using LEGO®. When I build my models(even though you can in theory have unlimited amount of pieces) I like to keep it simple and down to ground. This means, I build small models, trying to get as close to the original, but still keeping it's function as a model, and as a toy(for example, I'd never build a car, that has wheels that can't rotate to make wheels look closer to the real thing, and you can technically build my models out of real pieces and they would function properly and generally not fall apart) - function over form in short.

Keeping this in mind, I present you
UEF T1 Land Scout: The Snoop LEGO® version
Image
Image

The LEGO® model is quite as functional as the in-game one: the wheels can rotate, the turret can turn 360°, and even the gun can move slightly up and down. You will notice some things aren't exactly right, like colors or sizes, but that is simply my artistic freedom(a.k.a. I'm restricted by the amount of different parts that are available in LDD - take a note of the rear wheel being way out of proportion, also I added a brighter blue here and there to make it more interesting), a way to add some visual interest, since I can't have as detailed textures as the original thing. Also, I make a map marker for every unit I recreate(visible in first picture, on the left).

More units on their way, though don't expect I'll be spitting them out like crazy. Creating one unit can take from 30 minutes, up to several hours, or days(and I'm not exactly swimming in free time). Also, my model pictures aren't direct screenshot from LDD, but are rendered to look like the real thing!

Tools and materials used:
Lego Digital Designer(free software, you can find it here)
LDDtoPOV-Ray converter(free software, used to turn LDD models into POV models for rendering)
POV-Ray(free software, renders the images so you get nice, real-like looking LEGO® models)

You can download the LDD model here if you want to check it out(you will have to get LDD as well)
