FAF games speed / performance vs Vanilla FA

Postby relent0r » 05 Jan 2019, 23:55

I haven't really seen any discussion on this in the FAQs or anyone else talking about it so I'm not sure if its specific to me or if I've missed the previous conversations.

What are the expectations for the performance / speed of FAF vs FA.

I'm using an AMD FX 8320 with 24GB of ram and a 970 gtx. Now I fully understand that FA is single threaded performance limited and I understand that AMD doesn't do well vs intel in this area so i get that I'd see better performance with an i5 or i7.

What I'm wondering is what is the expectation? Is FAF designed to run as the same game speed as FA? or is it some kind of compromise between the original supcom and FA? For me FAF game speed is noticeably slower than FA right from the start and I'm not talking SIM speed or FPS. Although thats also an issue after the first 30 mins but understand that's just the reality of the cpu hardware.

Do other people that spent alot of time with FA previously need to adjust or noticed a real performance hit using FAF with the same settings.

I find it extremely unlikely that our devs are able to optimise and profile like the original devs. Of course FAF would be slower but it shouldn't matter - hardware is faster now

I dont have th numbers but some perf test were made and FAF runs slightly faster since we optimized a lot of code (still just the Lua code and not the engine)

And by slightly, lets say around 5% faster.

We have added expensive features that I doubt are benchmarked vs normal fa.

For example. Holding shift shows reclaim which is expensive. Split attack and autostorage allows many orders to be added instantly.

You're not looking at the reclaim all the time.

And the others are so insignificant. Sure if you split attack 500 ASFs you get a spike in that tick, but that's it, and then it goes back to normal.

I actually am pushing shift all the time to queue orders. In a team game someone would be shifting at any point in time

By default you need control shift for that.
And then this would drop FPS without affecting the sim speed.

Also Kyryl is patching the exe to optimize the range rings which tanks the FPS the most.

So the consensus I'm getting here is that the time it takes an ACU to walk from point a to b on a map should be exactly the same on FA and FAF assuming were at the start of the game. So I've got something else going on as its simple things like rate or fire / unit movement speed which seems off in comparison.

those things depend on unit speed, projectile speed etc etc which may or may not have been changed in faf in the last 6 years

only way to measure the game speed is to play the game and stop the time it takes to get to x time in in game minutes

we have a test map for that where lots of ASF spawn to fight each other so we can run that over and over again for x times and then compare the results - and by doing that we came to the conclusion that the simulation speed in faf is slightly faster than in steam fa
