Nullpointer, could you please tell me how to install Forged Alliance using Playonlinux? Any special requirements or did it just work out of the box for you?

I didn't use PlayOnLinux; I just used straight wine. Basically it worked right out of the box (just install the game from Steam or wherever you bought it). The only thing I needed to do is open winecfg, go to Libraries and add an override for msvcrt to do load for builtin and then native, as opposed to native and then built in.
Also make sure you are using the proprietary drivers for your gpu. The open source ones have horrible 3D performance for the most part.

Dude, a bit off topic but i dunno what you got fa running on, but it runs total shit for me : there is no way to activate second display. wine 1.5, ubuntu 12.4, HD 6870 ATI/AMD Proprietery grahics driver (couldn't intall the post-realese updated one), the best option so far is "multi display desktop with dispaly(s) 2 ("single display desktop (multi-desktop)" doesn't work, one stays grayed out even though mouse and display number appear and finally the "Xinerama display option" makes unity crash it boots up without it, and none of those help fa activate second display)

oh and fa runs almost without a single bug except after you win, the score button doesn't pop up and the other top three buttons become unresponsive.

steam works great

I'd like some hints if you have any.

i just installed Ubuntu 12.10 on my Notebook and of course i installed faforever on it.
after the installation of dotnet4 and vc2005-2010 it started fine, but i couldn't log in, 'cause even after a new account creation i got the "Unique ID found for another user" error.
Does anyone know how to solve this?

Edit, i personally havn't tested it, but have you tried setting a "virtual height x width" section in the xorg.conf to configure the MultiDesktop with the Standard Settings Manager?
Xinerama never worked for me.

of course not, but maybe some of the Linux friends ran into the same problem and solved it.
With Planetary Annihilation und Steam coming for Linux and Forged Alliance running fine with wine,i changed to the imho "better system".
And despite no linux support for FAF, i wanted to try the whole thing.
What a pity that there are no Plans for a Native Linux Client.

Linux is the "do it yourself" OS, so .... :)

the lobby should be able to run with minor changes. the furthest i got was that i could create a new user,
but i was unable to generate a uniqueid. nor should i have to, i just want to port the application.

@sheppard

FA runs fine with wine, but i can't login at the lobby.
So if the lobby stuff starts to work everybody is happy :D
for me it's irrelevant if with wine or not
