WWPC - Keep it going or no? Weekly tourneys make me feel no

Postby Morax » 20 Oct 2015, 19:36

Hi Fellahs (Zock and visionik, especially),

I've personally donated $ and tons of my personal time over the time I've joined the community (FaF), took charge of the WWPC, and have taken the time to manage / work with a tough audience. It's not easy to keep everyone happy and I take a lot of jabs for my decisions that make some happy and others upset. You know the feeling, I'm sure.

It's a little troubling to see that so little support has been given to my work and that all the sudden funded tournaments are now taking place weekly. I and others have kindly brought this up as the WWPC was asking for a small prize pool (nothing major) to keep things going.

SOURCE: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9613&start=30

Not sure how things are being funded and etc but as someone who is constantly driving himself to help the community this is makes me upset.

What is going on? Should I just can the WWPC? People have told me they probably won't be playing due to these tournaments and that it's probably best to shelve the WWPC for awhile.

Thoughts? I don't want to put the time and effort into this anymore if it's just going to be ignored. I feel as if creating a weekly tournament like this just gave the "shoulder shrug" to my work.

I'm open to discussion...

I think you've done a great job with wwpc and I'm grateful that the tournament was running while there was a complete lack of tourneys. Visionik said he would fund so I don't know why that hasn't happened but I think you should continue with wwpc, it's a great tournament. With funding it will be even better. If you want a hand running it i'd be happy to help, it seems quite demanding for 1 or 2 people to run it alone.

Hi Morax,

I am honestly surprised and confused that you view the tournaments as competition or even attack on WWPC or your work and time put into it. I don't understand how a tournament that happens on a single day stays in any contrast to a ongoing competition that takes place over a time period of two weeks. It would be nice if you could explain how the two are conflicting in any way, otherwise i'm a bit lost here. I don't think the weekly tournys will have any negative impact on WWPC at all, rather a positive one with getting people to play 1v1 that would otherwise not, and some of them might end up playing in WWPC too. Though if people told you they stop WWPC because of the tournys it appears i've been wrong. What was their reasoning, what can we do to prevent this from happening and what else would you want me to change about the tournys to show my support of WWPC and that the weekly tournys are in no way meant as competition to it?

I think WWPC is great for FAF, and i appreciate the effort and work put into it, but from my point of view, as more tournaments as better, and that there is no competition or conflict unless two tournaments happen at the same time.

If it's just about the money, i'm sorry that you feel left out. I just wanted to do something for the community and the lack of more tournaments always seemed a bit sad to me. Visionik was so generous to offer the funding for prize money, but i'd have done the tournys without it too, as long as enough players are interested in them.

I absolutely support your work and i want to ask you and sincerely hope that you don't stop. If anything, i'll rather stop the weekly tournys, they are a lot of work too after all, and their whole purpose was to increase the amount of tournaments and events for FAF, if they will lead to the end of WWPC, this purpose is not fulfilled anymore.

Thank you for your explanation.

Where to start... okay... here goes:

1) Concept and Understanding

It's not being taken as an attack but as a "lack of organization" concern. By that I mean we as Tournament Directors have a section to discuss these type of matters, ideas, schedules, etc, etc. The group is closed off to a few select people and therefore leaves a lot of "fluff" and "flame war" explosion threads to a minimum. From what I see, the only mention of your weekly tournaments was "STARTING NEXT WEEK!" rather notifying the rest of the TDs about this operation.

Had the idea been raised in the TD section we could all as a group raise concerns/suggestions/complimnets/prizes and what-have-you.

2) Time Issues

The WWPC is pretty much made possible by individual participants making their own schedules. With the time zones being an issue it's already become nearly ridiculous for Oceania and EU/US players to get decent matches. I've played Sir-Prize and Anihilnine at insane hours (like 4:30-5 am before work) so it's quite necessary to have as much time on the weekend for this tournament.

Since it's tough during the week with school/work/whatever most people opt to do a lot of the matches over the weekend. With the weekly tournaments almost every Sunday will conflict in some way where people may want to do WWPC as well.

Now, I know the weekly only affects a different rating class each time but it will either be U1100, U1500, U1900, O1900, or mixes of the bunch. Does this make sense?

Ideally, both tournaments should be able to run fine and all. With my experience and scheduling, barely are there any weeks where people actually complete the BO5 or KOs on time - ever. So I don't think it can.

3) Seemingly Empty Promises

Per my linked thread, I've been told early on that we'd get a smidge of funding and support. I have yet to once get a real convo with visionik to have a real conversation about my ideas and get to know him. I know he's a really busy guy but I'm curious as to why this never took place. How did others get their time? Am I being too offensive given my history in BC? Am I not good enough a player to weigh in? What's up?

4) Public Recognition

In order to bring the WWPC to the next level I need help bringing awareness and public opinion outside the message boards. We did get Gyle to mention it once, and his effort is appreciated, but he too just took off and did something rather coordinate with the TDs about what to say

Several times I've seen other tournaments and notices on the "What's New" page and advertised elsewhere.

Quite simply, I'm a little frustrated to put effort into something like this.

My inclination is that your tournaments are newer and fresher, which people like. Rather see multiple weekly tournaments I think it may be better to focus on one set and make it great rather "so-so." The WWPC is not too great right now. Not a lot of people play and it makes it dull... With just a little cash Lextoc and I got like 10 pros to play competitively among the other lower-rank entries.

Maybe we can all talk this weekend or set up a time. I'd like to know where things are going rather try to boil it down in the clogged up message boards.

That's all, and thanks.

Hi, i can't talk about what's been promised, but i asked visionik to take a look at the thread and we'll hopefully sort things out. I know WWPC is not going too well and there are most likely are variety of reasons for this, prize money (or lessons ;) ) being only one of them and i understand that this can be frustrating at times when you put in work and time, but i don't think the weekly tournys are to be blamed for this.

About the organization aspect, you are right, there was no reason not to get feedback from other TDs first, but i really didn't believe (and still don't) hosting tournaments can cause trouble for anyone except the ones who have to do provide the work and time to make them happen.

I can do something about this however:
Several times I've seen other tournaments and notices on the "What's New" page and advertised elsewhere.

If you give me (or Gorton, i'm sure he won't mind) something to post in What's New i can do that.

Thanks, Zock.

I forgot to mention one last thing:

It was told to me MONTHS ago that custom-made 1v1 games would affect ladder rating rather global. This has been a hot topic in the WWPC as we strive to use ranked settings for statistics and regulation.

Why did this get dropped? Many people left the WWPC because their global rating is higher than their ladder, which in turns take huge hits. How many labor hours of coding is it to make a 1v1 match affect ladder? I mean seriously, I'm not a programmer but thinking about it in my head baffles me.

I am going to outright admit I hate that it affects global. I've promised WWPC participants for long enough to "just deal with it," and now I'm at the point where it's making me ticked off.

My credibility is suspect because of this issue alone. I wanted to believe in myself that I was justified in telling people this but now I even dislike my own rules.

I know that through the years WWPC has been supervised by a number of different people. If Morax wants to take a break, then someone else can take charge. With a new individual in charge rule enforcement and slight changes to rules is likely. At the same time Morax can make rule adjustments to make his life easier.

Let's hear what visionik says and I'll consider letting someone else run it.

It's easy to get few words about your tourney on what's new page. It just takes to write it down and Gorton will proxy that. Or if you wanna be cool, you make Exotic_Retard to do a poster for you and then you make Gorton post it. Easy as can be. ^^ If you do it right like me, you don't need to do much for tournament to be advertise. And if you kidnap Gyle's dog... holy shit he'll mention wwpc in every cast, might even cast some games... (though he's hard to catch up lately)
