My try on more uniform textures

Postby NewForumAccount » 17 Sep 2015, 00:35

Since the current textures are very inconsistent, I started to retexture some units.

I personally like the original Nova texture most, but since it is only one color you couldn't identify units very well so instead I'm using two main textures.

The software im using for this enables very fast progress, I already got 4 out of 5 material-textures, which change all but the Teamcolor and emissive textures.
The pitch-black texture is a placeholder and will probably be replaced with a smooth metal-texture.
Details (missle-tube holes, lights etc.) will be added later.

That's very interesting, thanks for even working on it!

I like your base texture but I think it doesn't blend too well with the golden hexagonal parts yet. It's an encouraging start though!

What software do you use? If you use Substance Designer, you should get in touch with Brute51 who already set up something and you could share your assets.

I'm using Substance Designer, but the most time consuming part are the ID-maps which Brute51 probably hasn't finished too many of.
To get the 2 main textures to match better, I'll probably have to make a new texture for the seams.

I like what you did with the tank and when the metal parts and seams are done, it'll look quite good. I'm not convinced with the naval units though, but maybe it's because the team colours and speculars are not properly adjusted.

The question is : do you intend to keep working on it and texture a lot of units? If so, Brute will probably brief you and help you with lot of stuff.

You can check what he did with Substance designer so far, though his custom program to generate textures uses his computer path.
I'm just pointing you to the repository so you can see if you find something useful for now, but later Brute can help you more directly.

I plan to texture everything but (S)ACU and buildings (~40 units), since my textures don't really fit those;
as long as I can finish the "design" part before I go to University, I can do the easier, repetetive rest reliably on the side.
The most annoying part will be the placement of additional details with Photoshop at the end.

Brutes .sbs seems quite complicated, with only 40 units I won't need too much automation,
I also haven't a lot of experience using Substance Designer (didn't make but bought the main texture)

Hi, yeah the SBS that I made is quite complex. It is probably because I use a software development and a layered aproach. Also I have limited experience (and some frustrations) with SD.

Anyway, if you plan to redo textures then that would be great! I've been putting that off for a while now. We should have a chat soon though to coordinate efforts because I plan to do some model modifications.

I hope you guys keep working on the Nomads. The new textures look great imo.
In general I am not fully convinced of the look of the Nomads - they look so clumpsy, a bit like toys put together with huge wooden blocks (e.g. https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/73 ... d46c7d.jpg).
I hope this doesn't come off as super negative because as I said I really like the idea of an additional faction.
I also have a hard time getting used to all the different colors of the Nomads clashing together (orange/gold, blue, green hover). Lookks alittle visually overloaded imo... sorry!
BUT the shields of the Nomads are the best looking in the entire game! Outstanding job with them!
Again, sorry If it sounds too negative - it certainly isn't meant to be!
